Easy Cycling in Lodigiano
The area around Lodi (Lodigiano) is a paradise for those who want to cycle easily, relax in the country side and enjoy the food specialties and the wines unique to this area.
“Lodigiano a Ruota Libera” (Free Wheel Lodigiano/ Lodigiano on Two Wheels) is an association of operators who decided to join forces to offer a different type of holiday to those who love cycling, those who wish to spend their free time far away from the stressful rhythm of  city life and those who want to discover a piece of Italy far from the most common tourist locations.
We created three different cycling routes that allow you to discover the most charming spots of the area.

You can follow the cycle routes on your own, thanks to our “roadbook”: detailed directions of each itinerary,  or you can take advantage of our rural tour guides who not only will guide you along the road, but will also  explain to you  the different characteristics  of the area.

The Lodigiano area has the oldest network of irrigation canals in Europe that date back to medieval times. The cycle routes follow some of these old canals that offer ever changing scenery.

We look forward to welcoming you!

A Different Sort of Holiday

A cycling holiday is a different sort of holiday, in close contact with nature and all the experiences, impressions, sounds and scents it has to offer.
Unfortunately this type of holiday is not for everyone; you need training and a good level of fitness.

However, the area around Lodi, thanks to its structure, is ideally flat which makes cycling accessible to everyone:

- those who love cycling

- families with children

- people who love the outdoor life without sacrificing any comforts.

“Lodigiano a Ruota Libera” (Lodigiano on Two Wheels) allows you to organize a hassle-free cycling holiday as we will take care of every detail:

- Bike rentals

- Hotels with overnight storage area for the bikes (should you take your own).

- Restaurants with bike racks, when you stop to eat on the way.

- Insurance, road assistance and repair kit.
All this without obviously forgetting the most classical aspect of a holiday: a comfortable bed, a cosy bedroom and delicious food typical of the Lodi area.

The Beautiful Countryside
Lodi’s countryside is constantly changing following the natural rhythm of the seasons.

In March and April the earth has an orange tinge. Farmers start working to prepare the soil for the corn sowing. You can see storks flying and landing on the ground to feed.  Trees, wheat and grass have a deep fresh green colour contrasting against the brown fields that still need to be ploughed and seeded with corn. The smell of the earth is thick and the swallows start arriving. Young shoots of wheat and barley are as green as the fresh grass in the meadows.

In  May farmers start cutting grass to make hay. The fresh smell of the hay permeates the atmosphere.  Wheat and barley are still short and you can see far across the fields.

June is harvest time for wheat and barley.  July is irrigation time: water moves from the main canals to the smaller ditches through a system of locks and channels. This irrigation system dates back to the time when the fields were cultivated by Cistercian monks.

In August, the corn cobs are fully formed and the plants reach nearly 2 meters in height (you might be cycling between "walls" of corn.)

In September the fields return to their original green colour. In October the harvest is completed and the view is once again open to the immense landscape which is tinged with tones of yellow and red. The canals and ditches are still full of water, but are no longer used to irrigate.

In November the earth begins its period of rest, however there are still sunny days when it is pleasant to cycle through the countryside.  The fog arrives and covers the fields with a veil, at times thick, that wraps up the countryside giving the landscape a unique ancient charm.

In December,  January and February the weather is cold, but if the days are nice you can enjoy short rides.  The trees are white, covered with frost and ice, and their branches stand out against the deep blue sky.
